Reasons to remove wallpaper from walls:
- Since home owners like to redecorate often, many home owners prefer texture and paint on their walls.
- Compared to wallpaper, painted walls require less maintenance. If wallpaper is damaged and the homeowner does not have extra wallpaper, the entire room needs to be re-wallpapered in the new style. Painted walls are easy to touch up and require less material cost when updating.
- Many homeowners prefer one solid color finish rather than having multiple patterns and multiple colors of wallpaper.
- It is easier to find a paint color that blends with room furnishings than finding the right wallpaper.
Process to remove wallpaper from walls:
- Remove all pictures frames, electrical covers, A/C vents, or mirrors. If the mirror will not be replaced and it’s glued to wall, mask around the mirror.
- Using masking plastic, mask off flooring and any furniture in the room.
- Using a 6-inch drywall knife, test a small area on the wall to see if the wallpaper can be removed without water. If the surface has primer under the wallpaper, the wallpaper should come off easily.
- If the wallpaper cannot be removed easily, spray some water on the wallpaper using a pump sprayer or small bottle sprayer first and wait for 15-20 minutes before trying to remove wallpaper.
- After wallpaper is removed, check the surface to make sure it is smooth and ready for primer and paint. If you prefer smooth walls, then no texture is needed. Use drywall compound to patch any holes or cracks, and sand as necessary.
- If texture is desired, prepare the walls. Using drywall compound, fill all cracks and holes. Float walls and then sand smooth. Apply new texture such as knockdown, orange peel, or skip trowel.
- Inspect walls after texturing and prior to painting. Some edges may need to be sanded lightly.
- Apply high build drywall primer to new textured walls. This is a necessary step before applying the final topcoat paint.
Tip: Ask the paint store if they can tint the primer in the same final color or as close as possible to it as this will help final coverage.
- Apply a minimum of two coats of paint to primed walls.
- For electrical outlet covers covered in wallpaper, soak the electrical outlet covers in a hot water and soap. Remove the wallpaper from the covers. Dry the covers and re-install. You can also replace all covers with new covers.
- Perform the final inspection to see if any touch up is needed.
- Remove masking and thoroughly clean all areas.
